A recent field case involving ISO VG 220 oil highlighted an important point.
Oil was being processed directly from a 200-litre barrel. During circulation, the oil became milky and the LVDH continued removing litres of water. The problem was not necessarily the dehydration process—the initial quantity of water inside the barrel was unknown.
Oil at the top of a barrel may appear clear while free water has settled at the bottom. Once circulation starts, this water can get disturbed and emulsified into the oil. The LVDH is then forced to process an unknown quantity of bulk water, considerably increasing dehydration time.
Our recommended arrangement is:
Barrel → Conical Settling Tank → Drain Free Water → LVDH
The settling tank should have a drain valve at the lowest point for removing water and sludge. LVDH suction should be taken slightly above the bottom.
Bulk free water should be separated first. The LVDH can then efficiently remove the remaining emulsified and dissolved moisture.
Good dehydration is not about promising a fixed number of hours. It is about understanding the starting condition of the oil and following the correct process.
